The market
WHO puts Armenian consumption at about 6.6 litres of pure alcohol per adult (2024), well below the EU average. Spirits are an export story: UN Comtrade shows HS 2208 exports of about USD 341 million in 2024 (mostly to Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Curacao) against imports of about USD 72 million (mainly via Georgia, the UK, Russia and France). Brandy is the lead category, led by the ARARAT brand of Yerevan Brandy Company (Pernod Ricard).
Importing
Spirits carry excise by type and age (e.g. AMD 8,000 per litre for whisky, rum and other spirits; AMD 3,300-24,000 for brandy by age, per the PwC summary). Armenia has separate, higher traveller limits for arrivals from Eurasian Economic Union states (secondary source); a law-firm guide (unverified, secondary) says commercial importers need an alcohol import licence. Tariff details were not found in sources reviewed.

About Armenia

Armenia is a landlocked nation located in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. The official language is Armenian, though Russian is also widely spoken across commercial and public life. Its economy is recognized for agriculture, mining, technology services, and traditional food and beverage processing.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal nationwide for adults aged 18 and older, with distribution handled through private retailers rather than a state monopoly. Registered businesses can import spirits, facing a 20% VAT, specific excise taxes, and 10% to 15% customs duties on non-EAEU goods. Local producers primarily manufacture brandy, vodka, and fruit distillates. This domestic focus provides clear opportunities for foreign suppliers of premium single malt whisky, gin, rum, and tequila to serve Yerevan's hospitality sector.
