About Austria

Austria is a landlocked country located in Central Europe, where German is the official language. Its economy is well known for industrial manufacturing, skilled services, engineering, and tourism.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Austria, with spirits distributed through private retail and gastronomy channels rather than a state monopoly. Commercial entities holding an EORI number can import most spirits duty-free under HS 2208, subject to 20% VAT and an excise duty of €1,200 per 100 liters of pure alcohol. Local production centers on gin, eau-de-vie, liqueurs, edelbrände, schnapps, and whisky. Market opportunities exist for exporters supplying premium craft spirits, single-cask whiskies, high-end rums, and artisanal agave spirits.
