About Bulgaria

Bulgaria is located in Southeast Europe on the eastern Balkan Peninsula, bordered by the Black Sea. The official language is Bulgarian. The country is known for its agricultural sector, industrial manufacturing, and tourism.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Bulgaria, operating under a private wholesale and retail distribution system without a state monopoly. Most pure distilled spirits under HS 2208 face 0% import duty, alongside an excise rate of BGN 1,100 per hectolitre of pure alcohol and standard 20% VAT. Local manufacturers primarily produce grape rakia, vodka, liqueurs, gin, brandy, and mastika. Exporters have opportunities in premium imported brown spirits and premium gin, supported by one of the European Union's lowest spirits excise duty rates.
