The market
Beer is about 60% of alcohol market share; per capita beer consumption peaked at 65.6 litres in 2021 and fell to 59 litres in 2022. Pisco is a protected spirit: Chilean distilleries must grow their own grapes, and about 18% of pisco value is premium. Pisco production was about 30 million litres in 2013. CCU is a leading brewer (Cristal, Escudo); Capel is a main pisco producer.
Making spirits
Pisco classes: Tradicional 30-35%, Especial 35-40%, Reservado 40%, Gran Pisco 43%+ (Wikipedia: Pisco). Regulator for pisco is SAG per reference only.
Importing
Imported spirits pay an additional tax of 31.5% (pisco, whisky, aguardiente and other distilled spirits, per the 2014 tax reform Law 20.780, as described in a Feb 2021 accounting guide) plus 19% VAT; imports are cleared through customs agents. Chile has many free trade agreements, so the customs duty on spirits is often 0%, but this was not verified; check the rate for the origin country.

About Chile

Chile is located along the western coast of South America, flanked by the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Spanish is the official language. The economy is known for mining, particularly copper, as well as agriculture, forestry, and winemaking.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Chile for adults aged 18 and older, with imports managed through registered local importers and retail sold via licensed private channels. Imports face standard 6% customs duties—or 0% under free trade agreements—plus a 31.5% ad valorem tax and 19% VAT. Local producers manufacture pisco, gin, liqueurs, vodka, whisky, and brandy. International suppliers face strong opportunities in premium whisky, craft gin, and rum, provided they satisfy mandatory health warning and calorie labeling regulations.
