About Congo

Located in Central Africa along the Congo River, the Republic of the Congo has French as its official language, alongside Lingala and Kituba. The country's economy is predominantly based on petroleum extraction, forestry, and agriculture.

The spirits market

Commercial alcohol sales and imports are legal, requiring registered businesses to obtain a Special Import Authorization and GUOT registration for private retail distribution. Shipments face a 30% import duty, regional levies, a 25% excise tax, and an effective 18.9% VAT. Local producers manufacture rum, liqueurs, and cane molasses alcohol, but domestic distilling capacity remains limited. As a result, growing urban demand in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire provides opportunities for exporters of premium spirits, particularly Scotch whisky, Cognac, vodka, and gin.
