About Guyana

Guyana is located on the northern coast of South America, bordered by Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname. It is the only English-speaking country on the continent. Its economy is traditionally rooted in agriculture and natural resource extraction, alongside significant offshore oil production.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal and distributed through licensed private trade, though indigenous Village Councils may restrict local supply. Registered businesses can import spirits, subject to a 20% to 30% import duty, GYD 220.00 per litre excise tax, 14% VAT, and a GYD 10 environmental levy. Local producers manufacture rum, vodka, gin, liqueurs, and potable neutral alcohol. The booming offshore oil sector drives expanding commercial demand for premium imported whiskies, cognacs, and specialty spirits.
