Making spirits
Regulated state by state (State List).
Importing

Imports of HS 2208 were about US$562m in 2024 (UN Comtrade), led by the UK, Ireland and France. State excise, which varies widely, is added on top.

About India

Located in South Asia, India is a diverse nation where Hindi and English are widely used alongside numerous regional languages. Its broad economy is recognized for technology services, manufacturing, and agricultural production.

The spirits market

Alcohol laws vary by state, with total prohibition in areas like Bihar and Gujarat, while others distribute through state monopolies or private retailers. Qualified commercial entities can import, facing a standard 150% customs tariff or 100% for bourbon whiskey, alongside state taxes exceeding 100% to 300% of landed cost. Domestic production centers on rectified spirit, extra neutral alcohol, IMFL, rum, and whisky. Surging demand for premium spirits and single malts offers key opportunities for exporters.
