About Iraq

Iraq is located in Western Asia, bordered by Turkey, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria. The country's primary official languages are Arabic and Kurdish. Its economy is predominantly known for its vast petroleum reserves and oil production.

The spirits market

Iraq operates under partial prohibition, as Federal Iraq completely bans alcohol manufacture, commercial import, and retail sale. In contrast, the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region allows licensed commercial imports, manufacturing, and lawful sales. Spirits entering the Kurdistan Region face tariff duties between 20% and 80%, alongside a 300% sales tax and a 15% import sales tax. With local producers making spirits such as arak, whisky, and vodka, commercial opportunities for exporters are restricted exclusively to the Kurdistan Region.
