The market
Kenya's beer market is led by East African Breweries (Tusker, White Cap), with Keroche and craft brewers also active. EABL's own site notes a High Court ruling declining to halt a Diageo-Asahi transaction. UN Comtrade shows HS 2208 imports of about USD 58.6 million in 2024 (UK, France, Mexico and South Africa the top origins) and exports of about USD 15.7 million, mainly to regional neighbours (Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania). WHO estimates total consumption at about 2.2 litres per adult, so unrecorded drinks are a large part of the market (not quantified here).
Importing
Kenya applies the East African Community common external tariff: duty on imported spirits rose from 25% to 35% from 1 July 2022, and excise on spirits roughly tripled in the 13 months to November 2021. Imported spirits (brandy, gin, whiskey, rum) fell from 16.3m litres in 2020 to 13.2m litres in 2022 (KNBS) as higher taxes pushed drinkers to local products. EABL's mainstream spirits sales fell 6% in the year to June 2025 as drinkers moved to illicit alcohol.

About Kenya

Kenya is located in East Africa along the Indian Ocean coastline. English and Swahili are the country's official languages. The economy is primarily known for agriculture, including tea and coffee production, alongside tourism, financial services, and regional transport logistics.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Kenya, with retail trade permitted through licensed private venues subject to regulated operating hours and zoning restrictions. Commercial imports require licensing via NACADA and the Kenya Revenue Authority, incurring a 25% or 35% import duty, KES 356.42 per litre excise duty, and 16% VAT. Local manufacturers produce potable spirits, gin, vodka, brandy, whisky, and cane spirit. Exporter opportunities are concentrated in premium single malt Scotch whisky, cognac, and craft gins.
