The market
WHO data show that about 86% of alcohol consumed in Malawi (2019) is in the "other" group, which in practice means traditional and home-brewed drinks, so branded spirits are a small part of the market. Declared HS 2208 imports are tiny (about USD 0.37 million in 2024), mostly from South Africa and Mauritius.

About Malawi

Malawi is a landlocked nation located in southeastern Africa. English serves as the official language, alongside widely spoken local languages such as Chichewa. The country's economy is predominantly agrarian, best known for the cultivation and export of cash crops like tobacco, tea, and sugar.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Malawi, where local manufacturers produce potable spirits, cane spirits, gin, whisky, and vodka. Registered commercial entities may import spirits, subject to a 30% MFN customs duty, a 110% excise duty, and 16.5% VAT tracked via digital excise stamps. With sales in sachets strictly prohibited, regulatory enforcement against illicit products creates opportunities for exporters of bottled spirits such as Scotch whisky, cognac, and gin.
