About Mali

Mali is a landlocked nation located in West Africa. Bambara is the most widely spoken language, alongside French which is used in official commerce. The economy is primarily known for agriculture, livestock farming, and gold mining.

The spirits market

Although the legal drinking age is 18, dry areas exist in northern and central regions, leaving retail distribution limited to licensed private establishments mainly in Bamako. Registered commercial entities import spirits through prior declarations, facing a 20% customs duty, 18% VAT, and excise taxes between 20% and 70%. Domestic production centers on industrial bulk spirits such as molasses alcohol and extra neutral alcohol. Consequently, export opportunities remain restricted to a small premium niche catering to expatriates and high-income urban consumers.
