About Malta

Malta is an archipelago situated in the central Mediterranean Sea, south of Sicily. The country's official languages are Maltese and English. Its economy is largely driven by tourism, financial services, maritime commerce, and information technology.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Malta, distributed without a state monopoly through private off-trade retailers and licensed hospitality venues. Registered operators handle imports, paying zero intra-EU customs duty, an 18% VAT, and an excise duty of €136.00 per hectolitre of pure alcohol. Local producers primarily manufacture liqueurs, anisette, and flavoured spirits. Exporters benefit from strong tourism demand, English-language label acceptance, and an April 2026 excise duty reduction on spirit-based RTDs to €0.136 per % vol. per litre.
