Import duty on spirits
French overseas department inside the EU customs territory, so the EU Common Customs Tariff applies (third-country duty is 0% on the high-value rum line checked; other 2208 lines not individually read, and the UK tariff derived from it shows 0% on most spirits). On top: French/DOM excise on alcohol, a local surcharge (successor to the octroi de mer-type duty) and a social-security contribution on drinks above 18% vol. Special reduced excise applies only to rum/spirits made and consumed in the same department.
The market
Martinique is a French territory (euro, prefecture Fort-de-France) and a major cane-spirit producer. Sugarcane is mostly used for rum; about 90,000 hl of pure alcohol was produced in 2009, of which 79,116 hl was agricultural rum (cane-juice rum). Producers can use the protected designation "AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole" for cane-juice rum made entirely in Martinique and meeting production standards. GDP was EUR 10.48 billion in 2024 (EUR 29,192 per head).
Importing
Alcohol rules and duties are expected to follow France, with special overseas regimes; not verified here.

About Martinique

Martinique is a French overseas island territory located in the eastern Caribbean Sea. French is the official language, alongside widely spoken Martinican Creole. The island's economy relies primarily on tourism, services, and agriculture, particularly the cultivation of sugarcane and bananas.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Martinique, with distribution handled by licensed private retailers and hospitality venues. Registered EU entities with an EORI number can import spirits, subject to standard excise duties of €1,932.42 per hlap alongside local Octroi de mer taxes of 25% to 40%. Local production centers heavily on AOC agricultural rum and liqueurs. Nevertheless, steady opportunities exist for exporters of premium whiskies, craft gins, cognacs, and vodkas catering to supermarkets and tourist hospitality.
