About Mauritius

Mauritius is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa. English and French are the primary languages used in government and business, alongside Mauritian Creole. The economy is widely known for tourism, financial services, textiles, and sugarcane agriculture.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Mauritius and distributed through private licensed trade rather than a state monopoly. Registered local entities manage imports, which face a 0% basic customs duty but incur heavy specific excise duties alongside a 15% VAT. Domestic producers focus predominantly on rum, cane spirits, and liqueurs. However, the island's luxury hospitality sector and tourist base drive steady demand for imported high-end scotch whisky, cognac, and premium craft spirits.
