About Mongolia

Mongolia is a landlocked country located in East Asia, bordered by Russia and China. The official language is Mongolian. Its economy is predominantly driven by mineral mining, agriculture, and livestock herding.

The spirits market

Alcohol sales are legal for adults aged 21, though periodic dry days and election bans exist. Commercial imports require a special permit from MOFALI, with spirits subject to a 15% MFN duty, specific excise taxes ranging from approximately MNT 3,700 to over MNT 31,300 per litre, and 10% VAT. While domestic production focuses heavily on vodka and potable grain alcohol, exporters find opportunities supplying premium spirits like Scotch whisky, Cognac, bourbon, and dark rum.
