The market
Jenever is the national spirit; about 98% of genever sold was the lighter 'jonge' style in 2021 and about 90% of jonge is a blend of malt wine, neutral alcohol and water. Trade is dominated by the Port of Rotterdam hub, so spirits import and export values are large relative to domestic demand. No reliable sales or brand-ranking data was found.
Making spirits
Genever is a protected EU geographical indication with 11 recognised types, made in the Netherlands, Belgium and small parts of France and Germany. Distillers named on Wikipedia are in Schiedam, Amsterdam, Groningen, Baarle-Nassau and Dordrecht. Licensing authority not confirmed.
Importing
Import duty on spirits from outside the EU is almost always 0%, but 21% import VAT and Dutch excise are due; goods from other EU states need no customs declaration. Importers need an EORI number (non-EU), NVWA registration, labels meeting EU Regulation 2019/787 and permitted bottle sizes; selling to consumers needs an alcohol licence and an SVH certificate. A Belastingdienst article 23 permit defers import VAT, and excise can stay suspended with the right Douane permits.
Advertising
Self-regulated under the STIVA Alcoholcode; fines for violations can reach EUR 50,000 (KVK).

About Netherlands

The Netherlands is located in Northwestern Europe, with Dutch as its official language. The nation's economy is recognized for international trade, logistics, maritime commerce, and agriculture.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal for adults aged 18 and older, though spirits containing at least 15% ABV may only be sold off-premise by licensed specialty liquor stores. Importers require KVK and EORI registrations, facing a 0% third-country import duty, an excise duty of €18.27 per hectolitre per 1% vol pure alcohol, and 21% VAT. Local production focuses on gin, whisky, liqueurs, genever, vodka, and rum. As a logistics hub with no pre-market registration barriers, the Netherlands presents viable opportunities for premium and craft exporters.
