About Rwanda

Rwanda is a landlocked country located in East Africa. Its official languages are Kinyarwanda, French, English, and Swahili. The economy is primarily known for agriculture, particularly coffee and tea production, as well as eco-tourism and services.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal for adults aged 18, with sales permitted through licensed private retailers and venues subject to municipal curfews. Importing requires business registration, a tax identification number, and Rwanda FDA licensing, with shipments incurring a 25% import duty, 70% excise duty, and 18% VAT. Local distilleries produce gin, vodka, whisky, waragi, and banana-based country liquor. Strict regulatory crackdowns on non-compliant local manufacturers, along with high-end hospitality and MICE sector growth, offer opportunities for exporters of authentic international spirits.
