The market
About 23% of Thais (around 16 million people) drink alcohol; beer is about 74% of alcohol sales, spirits 25% and wine 1%. Locally produced spirits are about 85% of spirits consumption, mostly cheap rice spirit and local mixed spirits. Imports are positioned as premium and sell in Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and Chiang Mai, with on-trade about 30% of volume and 50% of value. Wine reforms in 2026 ended the exclusive-agent system and the low-value import exemption, and tougher communication rules are under discussion (October 2026).
Importing
Only Thai-registered companies with an Excise Department licence may import wine and spirits; each shipment needs an import permit. Labels must be approved by the Excise Department and show net quantity, alcohol content, importer/producer details, a Thai-only health warning and production date or serial. Excise is levied on the declared ex-VAT retail price.

Alcohol communication is heavily restricted (details not retrieved).

About Thailand

Thailand is located in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. The official language is Thai. The country's economy is widely known for manufacturing, agriculture, and international tourism.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Thailand, though sales face designated retail hours, zoning bans, and strict licensing. Commercial importation requires a registered Thai legal entity with Excise Department permits, with products subject to up to 60% import duties, dual-rate excise taxes, surcharges, and 7% VAT. Local distillers manufacture white spirits, distilled spirits, rum, gin, and rice spirits. Strong demand for premium imported Scotch whisky, cognac, and gin offers opportunities for exporters who partner with licensed local distributors.
