About Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste is an island nation in Southeast Asia, occupying the eastern half of the island of Timor. Its official languages are Tetum and Portuguese, while Indonesian and English are also used as working languages. The national economy is primarily known for offshore oil and gas production, alongside agriculture, particularly coffee farming.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Timor-Leste with no dry areas, national drinking age, or state retail monopoly. Any registered commercial entity with a Tax Identification Number and customs registration can import spirits. Imports face a 5% CIF duty, US$ 8.90 per liter excise tax, and a 2.5% sales tax. Local producers make gin, vodka, botanical spirits, mead, vermouth, and traditional tua sabu palm brandy. Exporters benefit from an open import regime without brand registration barriers, serving demand in Dili's hospitality sector, expat market, and growing urban consumer base.
