About Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan is a landlocked country located in Central Asia, bordered along the west by the Caspian Sea. The official language is Turkmen, and Russian is also widely spoken. The country's economy is predominantly known for its vast natural gas reserves, oil production, and cotton farming.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal for adults aged 21, though subject to partial prohibition and nationwide weekend retail bans. Imports must be registered with the State Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange and incur duties of 5% to 10%, 15% VAT, and a 168% excise tax. Local producers mainly distill vodka, brandy, cognac, and grape spirits. Due to these heavy taxes, opportunities for exporters are realistically confined to supplying ultra-premium spirits to luxury hotels, diplomatic channels, and high-end restaurants in Ashgabat.
