About Uruguay

Uruguay is located in southeastern South America, bordered by Argentina, Brazil, and the Atlantic Ocean. Spanish is the official language. The nation's economy is well known for its agriculture, livestock farming, forestry, and tourism.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Uruguay for adults aged 18 and older, with sales permitted through registered private vendors and licensed importers registered with LATU. Non-MERCOSUR spirits face a 20% import duty, statutory IMESI excise rates reaching up to 80%-85%, and standard 22% IVA. Local distillers produce grappamiel, grappa, gin, vodka, and liqueurs, while predictable regulations create opportunities for exporters of premium Scotch whisky, international gin, and aged rum.
