Maharashtra enforces India's ban on ethanol from cane juice and B-heavy molasses

· 1 min read · Source: Maharashtra State Excise circular No. DYS1118/31137/IV of 26 Oct 2026 (Additional Commissioner of State Excise, Mumbai); Department of Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, letters No. 3(2)/2023-SP of 22 Oct 2026

On 26 October, Maharashtra's state excise department told every distillery in the state not to make ethanol from sugarcane juice or B-heavy molasses. The ban runs from 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027. The excise officer posted at each distillery must enforce it, and any violation will bring immediate action. The order follows India's federal food ministry decision of 22 October to stop sugar being diverted to ethanol for that year. Maharashtra is India's largest sugar producer.
