The market
Consumption is very low in recorded terms (WHO about 0.1 litres of pure alcohol per adult, 2022) because of religion and strict controls. A 2013 presidential regulation classifies drinks by strength: A under 5%, B 5-20%, C over 20%; since 2015 minimarkets and small shops may not sell alcohol, while supermarkets, restaurants, bars, clubs and hotels still can (Bali exempt). Wikipedia reports an import tax hike to 150% in 2015 and that high prices pushed consumers to illegal alcohol. Bintang (Multi Bintang, a Heineken Asia Pacific subsidiary) is the largest-selling beer.
Importing
Imports are heavily taxed; Wikipedia reports an import tax of 150% from 2015 (rate and legal basis to be checked against the Ministry of Finance tariff).
Sale restrictions
Minimarkets and small shops barred from selling alcohol since 2015; supermarkets, restaurants, bars, clubs and hotels allowed (Wikipedia, Alcohol in Indonesia).

Regulators: Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) - registered-importer (IT-MB) licences, import approvals (PI) and quotas, BPOM (National Agency of Drug and Food Control) - product registration (ML number), BPJPH (Halal Product Assurance Agency) - halal / non-halal labelling, Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) - customs and cukai

About Indonesia

Indonesia is an archipelagic nation located in Southeast Asia between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The official language is Indonesian, alongside diverse regional languages. Its economy is recognized for agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and international tourism.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal but strictly regulated, with complete prohibitions in Aceh, Papua, and select municipalities. Foreign firms cannot import directly; imports require licensed Indonesian entities with quotas, and retail is restricted to licensed hospitality and specialty shops. Inbound spirits face a 150% import duty and IDR 152,000 per litre excise for Group C. Domestic producers make vodka, soju, whisky, and Balinese arak, while commercial opportunities focus on premium brands for tourism destinations like Bali.
