About Mozambique

Mozambique is located in Southeast Africa along the Indian Ocean coastline. Portuguese is the official language, spoken alongside numerous indigenous languages. The country's economy is traditionally centered on agriculture, fishing, and growing mining and natural gas industries.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Mozambique, with distribution handled through licensed on-premise venues and off-premise retailers subject to nighttime sales curfews. Imports are handled by registered commercial entities and incur a 20% CIF duty, consumption taxes up to 75%, and 16% IVA. Local producers manufacture spirits including aguardente, gin, rum, and whisky. A ban on cheap informal ethanol blends and containers under 500 ml provides openings for exporters of legitimate, premium bottled spirits.
