About Portugal

Portugal is located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula, bordered by Spain and the Atlantic Ocean. The official language is Portuguese. Its economy is recognized for maritime trade, agriculture, manufacturing, cork production, and a prominent tourism sector.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal for adults aged 18 and older, with commercial distribution handled by private retailers. Importers with an EORI number benefit from 0% customs duties on most spirits under HS 2208, though mainland excise is €1,602.51 per hectolitre of pure alcohol plus 23% VAT. Local distilleries primarily produce liqueurs, gin, and regional brandies like aguardente bagaceira and aguardente de medronho. Strong demand for premium international spirits, such as single malts and aged rums, offers straightforward market entry for foreign brands.
