About Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island territory of the United States. Its official languages are Spanish and English. The island's economy is recognized for manufacturing, particularly pharmaceuticals, alongside tourism and services.

The spirits market

Commercial alcohol sales are legal across Puerto Rico through a private distribution system, with imports managed by licensed wholesalers holding local Hacienda and federal U.S. TTB permits. Local distillers primarily produce rum, ron caña, pitorro, and vodka. In addition to an 11.5% sales tax, excise duties are $15.12 per wine gallon on cane spirits and $31.29 on non-cane spirits. Exporters find opportunities in super-premium whiskies, craft tequilas, and artisanal spirits, provided pricing accommodates the higher non-cane excise tax.
