About Slovenia

Slovenia is a Central European country bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, with Slovene as its official language. The nation is known for its developed, export-oriented economy, particularly in manufacturing, automotive components, and pharmaceuticals.

The spirits market

Commercial alcohol trade is legal, operating without a state retail monopoly through private stores and hospitality venues. Importers with an EORI number face 0% customs duty on primary spirits categories, though goods incur 22% VAT and an excise duty of €1,412.40 per hectolitre of pure alcohol. Domestic producers primarily manufacture gin, liqueurs, and fruit brandies like brinjevec and sadjevec. Exporters benefit from an open market without pre-market label approvals, but must navigate higher excise rates and a complete ban on advertising spirits exceeding 15% ABV.
