About Taiwan

Taiwan is an island located in East Asia off the southeastern coast of mainland China. Mandarin Chinese is the official language, with Taiwanese Hokkien and Hakka also widely spoken. The economy is internationally recognized for its advanced high-tech industries, electronics, and semiconductor manufacturing.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal with a drinking age of 18, and products are sold through private retail channels without a state monopoly. Licensed corporate entities handle commercial imports, which benefit from a 0% customs duty on major spirits, an excise tax of NT$2.5 per liter per degree of alcohol content, and 5% VAT. Domestic producers supply liqueurs, baijiu, whisky, rice spirits, rum, and gin. With zero tariffs and ad-quantum excise rates, Taiwan presents prime opportunities for exporters of premium single malt whiskies, boutique gins, and craft spirits.
