About Germany

Germany is located in Central Europe, with German as its official and primary language. The country is known for its strong industrial economy, renowned globally for engineering, advanced manufacturing, and automotive production.

The spirits market

Alcohol is legal in Germany with no state retail monopoly, though distilled spirits are restricted to adults aged 18 and older. Registered commercial EU entities holding an EORI number can import spirits, benefiting from 0% customs duties on most spirit types alongside an excise rate of €1,303 per hectolitre of pure alcohol and 19% VAT. Domestic producers primarily produce liqueurs, gin, whisky, fruit brandies, eau-de-vie, and korn. Opportunities exist for exporters supplying premium craft spirits, botanical gins, aged whiskies, and low- or no-alcohol alternatives.
